Power Mac G5 worth the upgrade?
Posted by Heather Moreau on January 31, 2009 at 4:45 amI’ve got the oldest G5 model: 1.6 MHz, 4GB Ram max, and a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.
It meets the specifications for Final Cut Studio 2, but will it run smoothly? And can it handle HD?
How about if I upgraded the graphics card to an ATI Radeon 9600 PRO?
Thanks for your advice and help.

January 31, 2009 at 5:52 amHi Heather,
I think it will be anyway short of processor.
But I recommend you keep the G5 in good shape.
Two days ago the screen of my MBP died and I woke-up my G5 after more than one year sleeping.
Saved my life. Is a great machine.

February 1, 2009 at 5:44 pmI have a G5 duel 2.5 with the 6gigs of ram and a ATI x800 graphics card. FCP S2 runs fine. Its the rendering in HD and compressing thats the killer. I want to upgrade but would need to upgrade everything. AJA card, Esata card ect. Big money. So slower is a go for now. I would think if you are only doing SD you should be good to go.

February 2, 2009 at 5:47 pmIf this were me, I’d be trying to locate a used Intel machine and keeping the G5 for standby and other non-video applications.
I think you’re going to get orphaned sooner or later with new releases of the Mac OS and Apple’s video suites.
You will REALLY like Leopard on an Intel running a 3870 card.bogiesan

April 19, 2009 at 12:35 pmHi Heather,
I am about to upgrade to Studio 2 and was wondering how it runs on your machine? I also have a G5 1.6 and am curious to know if it can cope?! FCP 5.1.4 has been solid (although rendering speed is bad compared to dual machines).
How does Pro Res cope? Did you find a decent graphics card upgrade or did the GeForce 5200 survive?
Thanks,
Dan
