power backup
Posted by Pablo on July 7, 2005 at 4:59 pmI’m looking for a UPS to support the following: one G5 dual 2.7 Gh, a 30″ Cinema display, a G-raid, and 1 terabyte of external hard drive? Can you recommend a UPS and/or tel me the amps I need for this setup? Thanks.

July 7, 2005 at 5:41 pmMy that’s a long address! APC has a calculator (of sorts) that will allow you to choose your computer and monitor and peripherals. It is specific to the apple monitor and the dual g5 processors, just start by choosing tower, then the rest is self explanatory. If you don’t want to buy APC, use the calculator anyway to get you in the ballpark. I would by extra power, especially if you don’t go with a name brand UPC. I use strictly APC at my full-time job. I’m about to buy one for home and I’m torn between spending the money for APC which I trust completely, and finding a lesser brand that still claims high-joule surge protection in order to save money.
Hope this helps,

July 7, 2005 at 6:23 pmAPC, generally, but your equipment needs outstrip the conventionally available consumer and mid-pro boxes. You need a major UPS appliance or several smaller units to handle that load safely so be prepared for the sticker shock. What you do NOT want to happen is to have your monitor and computer stay up as your RAID spins down.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

July 8, 2005 at 2:09 amPerfect timeing. Go with the APC. I just bought a new unit after my Tripp Lite UPS failed on me last week. If it wasn’t for Data Rescue, I could have lost all my data on my FW 800 Dual Enclosure. I have the NS 1050. It has 6 battery backup outlets and 2 surge protected outlets. You connect a data cable to your MAC so it sees the UPS. Software supports Tiger. You can manage the software to automatically shutdown your computer after a certain amount of time or percentage of battery life. I highly recommend it and also Data Rescue.
