  • Potential RT Extreme issue with FCP 5.1.2

Posted by Walter Biscardi on October 12, 2006 at 6:03 pm

If you notice that your renders just don’t look as clean as they should with FCP 5.1.2, turn off RT Extreme before you do your final renders.

We’re getting a one scan line shift in anything rendered with our FCP 5.1.2 system. In our case, we’re putting lower third graphics over a talking head. Each time the graphic appears, the video shifts down one scan line and the bumps back up after the render.

In the timeline everything’s set to full quality, Safe RT and Video Processing set to Best. The only way to get the video to render cleanly is to actually disable RT Extreme, which mean every little thing needs to be rendered. I went back to the lone 5.1.1 system and renders are still clean there.

To disable RT Extreme go to System Preferences > Effect Handling. For the codec you’re using, change the setting from Final Cut Pro to None. In our case, we’re using Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2, so I just changed that codec to None.

All renders are now clean. So what I’m going to do is leave RT Extreme on until I’m all done editing, then turn it off and re-render everything.

Just a heads up for everyone else out there.

See it’s better for everyone if just one of us has to bang our head on the desk for hours looking for a solution.

Man… Walter! Don’t find all of the bugs in one week! None of us will have any fun….

Is this only for capture card guys, or do DV folks need to worry about this as well.

I’m assuming DV too because the issue appears both in the Canvas and the NTSC output. If it’s in the Canvas, then it’s the application causing the issue.

Is it only with graphics/alphas? What if you render a cc does the image shift then? I husteld to get a review DVD out the door today, working in 10 bit tho. DIdn’t notice any shifts, but again I was hustling. Tomorrow is tweak day (provided we have picture lock) and I’ll have to take a better look. Where did you create your graphics?

If I understand your observations correct it sounds like a fild shift from lower to upper – question would be if and how PAL-folks are affected.

For me as one of those PAL-guys I haven’t noticed anything so far – but a closer look into this issue – now that I know of it – will follow…

As far as I can tell, it’s a picture degredation issue rather than a field shift. It’s as if FCP is not fully rendering both fields as it does sometimes in a lower resolution. It was something I saw in the Canvas first because the main talking head video still looks very clean when the graphic hits. If it was a field reverse issue, the video would look very badly interlaced on my NTSC monitor when it happened.

It’ll be interesting to find out whether this issue is occuring across all codecs and formats or if it is limited to just a few like the 8bit SD NTSC codec I’m using.

It would also be good to know if its related in any way to KONA hardware.

Just tested this with lower third graphics created in Motion and exported as self contained quicktimes (animation codec).

I do not see what you describe at all with an 8 bit Uncompressed sequence and a DVCPRO HD sequence. No shift at all that I can percieve.

    Power Mac G5 Dual 2Ghz
    2.5GB RAM
    FCP 5.1.2
    DVDSP 4.1
    Compressor 2.3
    Live Type 2.1
    Soundtrack Pro 1.1
    MacOSX 10.4.8
    Quicktime 7.1.3
    Kona 2 (3.1 driver)
    Huge Systems MediaVault 400GB
    ATTO UL3D
    ATTO Driver 3.2

Can you provide more details about how the lower thirds were created..
