Post-Production Workflow – 35mm to D5 to FCP to D5
I am post-supervisor on a short being shot on 35mm. We are planning to telescine to D5, then capture the D5 to use the DVCPROHD codec and edit in Final Cut Pro. We then want to finish back on D5.
I wanted to check if this is a sane work flow or if anyone had suggestions for a better way to do it. Also, how does one go about exporting DVCPROHD to D5? Is it through use of an edl or is an upconvert possible?

the workflow will work,
but a lot hinges on what you mean by “finish back on D5”if you mean just play your DVCProHD out from FCP to the D5,
then yes, it’s a bit insane as you would be losing a bit of quality.if you mean you are going to re-conform from the original D5,
then you’ve described a perfectly normal and sensible (and sane) offline / on/line workflow.another solution could be to capture as ProResHQ.
that you would be able to play back out to the D5 with minimal generation loss.nick

depends on how you plan to reconform.
if you’re going outside of FCP, simple EDLs are pretty much universal.
talk to your post house for the format they require.if you are doing it inside FCP, then use Media Manager to create a trimmed, offline project set to your online res and re-capture.
MM settings:
– Create Offline mode (from the pulldown)
– Set Sequences to: your online format
– DO delete unused (un-tick anything that says “include”)
– Add Handles to taste
– Base Media FIle Names on: Clip Names is my guess, as you may be using subclips.cheers,
