    Hi.

I’m pretty new to AVID MC, since I just came from another post company, who only used Final Cut Pro. So everything is pretty new.
One of the many tasks, I got here, at the new company, is: How to run AVID completely over network.

Currently when a editor get’s to work, he downloads the project from the server, so it’s placed on the local machine. Then he edits, and in the end of the day, he then uploads it again, to the server.

I’ve tried a little bit my self, bother over AFP and SMB, without any luck, and I can’t seem to find anything on google. I’m properly using the wrong words. I guess FCP and AVID has different terms.

Anyway, here is some info on our network.
2 RAID’s connected to an xServer which runs sharepoints. The user then connects to a sharepoint (A project) over AFP.
We have 6 MC suites. Everything is mac

I’ve read a little bit about DAVE from Thursby. I’t just seems a little bit cumbersome. And also it’s SMB. I would prefer AFP because it’s an all mac environment.

So i would like to hear other ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards
    Kasper Folman

MC projects and media can only be shared when using Unity, ISIS, Terrablock, EditShare or (I think) Ingex. Unity-type project sharing is unparalleled.

    Kasper –
it’s not going to work. the AVID creates a .msm mediadatabase file
every time you launch the MC program. If you don’t have a metadata server, each MC will erase each others mediadatabase file. That’s the secret about AVID ISIS, EditShare and Facilis Terrablock. When using Media Composer, you can’t use a simple network.

And what is cumbersome about Thursby DAVE. It’s a flawless SMB protocol for MAC. Once it’s installed, there is no user interaction. You say Go>Connect to Server> smb://192.168.2.3, and you are in, via SMB. Its no different than connecting with the built in Apple SMB which doens’t work, and if you connect via AFP on a MAC, you still have to do afp://192.168.2.3 – so it is more difficult to type in smb than afp ?

You have only one problem. You have a basic understanding of networks, and it’s pissing you off that you can’t be the bigshot at your company, to build a home made shared storage system for AVID systems. Well Kasper – you can’t.

    You ask –
So i would like to hear other ideas ?

REPLY -yes, I have an idea. Buy the new AVID ISIS 5000 for $33,000, and you will have a beautiful working system. You are not going to figure this out by yourself.
