  • possible to render out a lower third graphic with alpha channel from FCP?

i know i should make this in Motion (don’t have AE), but for a few reasons, it was better made in FCP. i built a nice lower third graphic with several layers, and wonder if there is a way to render it out as a single layer graphic and plop it on my FCP timeline? i know about nesting layers, but i mean to render this out once as a single layer lower third with alpha channel…

thanks for helping out a bonehead!

You need to use a ProRes 4444 timeline, as that is the only codec that supports embedded alphas. Make sure that the settings are set for Millions + colors. Then export. And the export needs to be ProRes 4444.

I believe you could make your sequence with the lower third Animation or ProRes 4444 (millions of colors+) and export a self-contained QT file with Current Settings.

Shane and Kylee, thanks for the reminder about going to 4444 (and don’t forget the “+”!). I liked working in FCP a little better, mainly because of what i could do with shadows that Motion wasn’t letting me do. Although, from FCP, i keep getting the graphic rendered with chunks of picture missing. Really weird. I’ll keep at it, but it’s off to a good start. Thanks again…

And makes sure your Timeline is NOT rendered before Export.
