Possible to burn separate video clips, at different times, and DVD will pull in on fly?
Hi,
We are producing 20 minute promotional videos for various clients and about 15 minutes of it will always be the same content. Approx. 5 minutes of it we want to customize for the client. We want to avoid having to lay the new 5 minute content on our timeline, re-render the entire 20 minute project, and burn to DVD.
Is it possible to burn our new 5 minutes to a DVD that already has the other content pre-burned and then have it play the separate video clips in a particular order so the output is seamless?
Or can you recommend an efficient workflow? Speed of outputting these is key.
We are using CS3 Production Suite.

The DVD lays out similar to a regular movie DVD – where it goes to a Menu and they can select from 5 scenes or simply hit Play to start from the beginning.
The first 5 minutes is what we are customizing specifically for them – including both audio and video. After the first 5 minutes, the remining 15 minutes are always the same.

Sure make one video with the 15 minutes. Then another with the five and jump it to the 15 min track.

It sounds like you’re talking about editing. We currently do what you recommend but we are trying to reduce the time to burn to DVD. We are doing mass quantities of these so if we can have the menu and 15 minutes of content already on the DVD (we can auto burn the 15 minutes during the evenings so it doesn’t take day-time studio time) – then we can reduce our burn time during working hours by about 75% if only burning 5 minutes instead of the full 20 each time.
Or, think of it this way. Suppose you have a 1 hour movie and you want to burn 100 of these to send out but you want each DVD to have a separate movie title. You would have 100 unique DVD’s to burn. Would you have to change the movie title in the timeline and then burn the entire DVD each time? Or, could you have the entire 1 hour movie already burned, except for the title section, and then you just burn the new title on to the DVD and things synch up correctly?

Burn time would be the same no matter what you do- with a DVD it’s all or nothing. But if you made one track 15 minutes on all DVDs you make and just changed the 5 minute intro and then did an end to jump from it to the 15 minute piece, your authoring time would be easier I suppose. But you can’t burn 15 minutes of a template DVD and then somehow sneak in another 5 later.

So you are using Encore for the DVD authoring?
After the common elements have been encoded once you should be able to use the resulting files (m2v and ac3 or wav) in other Encore projects. It is as simple as importing those files and telling Encore not to transcode them.
The new video segment will, obviously, need to be encoded as appropriate for the project.
