POSSIBLE ISSUE WITH NEW FUJI D-BETA STOCK
Hey There,
Not sure if this is the best forum for this or not, but just wanted to create a possible warning of faulty FujiFilm Tape Stock. After many frustrating hours of outputting to tape we came to this conclusion. Wile outputting 4, 64 minute tapes from FCP studio 2, ProRes HQ sequence, through AJA Kona LHe to Sony DVW-500, we outputted 3 of 4 completely successfully. The second of the 4 tapes showed while playing back (not during output) that it was completely full of digital errors in the video as well as channel condition errors.
Assuming that is was a faulty tape, we tried 2 more brand new tapes with exactly the same results. Then proceded to try everything from completely trashing renders, re-building project, running D-Beta head cleaner (although the deck was routinely service recently) as well as replacing connection cables….still same result. While testing a previous project that was also built with exactly the same source material, sequence and output settings, we tested on an old tester d-beta that is kicking around the office and it worked perfectly fine. Pulled out another old tape and again, perfectly fine. Lastly, tested on another new tape – and the result was full of errors.
We then notice that on the Fuji D-Beta new tapes, the letter ‘i’ in fuji film has some red in it. After a closer look, we found all the new tapes have a different code related to the FujiFilm corporation on the tape box. Both of the old tapes had the code 106-8620 and all of the new tapes had the code 107-0052. After a little research in google, we were able to find that the code represents a postal code of some form and that the new tapes have come out of a different office in Tokyo. The new tapes also have a recyclable and e-friendly logo on the front.
We had ordered 2 seperate cases of Fuji stock from 2 seperate stores, both of which we have ordered an abundance of stock before – never with issues. We have tried many others of these ‘107-0052’ coded tapes – all resulting full of errors.
I would highly suggest avoiding any of this new Fuji Stock or ensuring you test your output extremely carefully.
