I was wondering if there was a way to distort an object kind of in the manner that bezier warp does — only instead of using the points that bezier warp gives you, is there way to use an imported path or a mask shape?

    Just curious

If you’re using AE 8 you could use the Puppet Pin Tool, its much more powerful than the standard Bezier Warp.

puppet is good, however, its my outer edge thats important. What Im trying to do is form a clip of fire to an OM symbol — just masking it looks cheesy — if i could get my clip to wrap, warp, or squeeze into that space i’d be much happier

How about trying the Reshape effect…

Like John said, Reshape should do the trick, just draw 2 masks on the Fire layer(set to none); 1) source mask (around your original fire and 2) Destination Mask (The shape you want it to become (logo shape)), then Percent to 100%.

Here is a tut for the fine-tuning of Reshape. It was for a face morph, probably more than you need, but it’s great for tips on adding and adjusting “correspondence points”:
