is there a way (in fcp hd 4.5 academic) to use the mouse to manually grab
a clip in the canvas and drag it to a specific position in the frame? i can’t
seem to find how to do this. is there a button or track i have to activate?

    thanks,

Double click the clip in the timeline. It will appear in the viewer. Click the “Motion” tab in the viewer. Look for the “Center” row and click the little + sign.

Then move over to the canvas and drag away!

Even easier, go to Image + Wireframe mode by going to the View Pop Up menu (or click on the Canvas and type W). Then you can click and drag the clip anywhere you like.

Tip: After roughing in placement, go to the Motion Tab in the Viewer and adjust the X, Y values to be whole, even numbers. This is for a tech purpost, but also even numbers make it easier to calculate spatial distances between other clips you add to the composite.

Also, get in the habit of dragging clips around the Canvas anywhere BUT the very center of the clip. This is because if you are dragging more than one selected clip, it won’t work if dragged from dead center. Always better to drag off center with the Large Crosshair, not the small ones.

    Have fun.
