Have a new computer – core 2 duo 6600 – all top notch parts, paid 6K. The problem is that the cpu’s are not be utilized properly. They may stay at around 70%, but drop to 15 – 20% for no reason. Affinity is set to both, process adjustments don’t seem to make a difference in task manager. As a consequence, its now slower the my older computer. I have 4 threads selected in preferences

    any suggestions appreciated

What’s your preview RAM set to? If it’s really high windows may spend more time swapping to the page file than it spends rendering.

Another possibility might be the types of media on the timeline. Things that rely on quicktime (esp. Tiff files) can really slow things down.
