Poor render quality in FCP
Hey guys…
FCP7, AE CS4
I have imported an AE graphics file into FCP and placed into my timeline. BEFORE it is rendered and when the playhead rests on the AE file, it looks great. However, in order to play it I must render (of course). When I do render it, it looks horrible. I have played with the render settings in the render control panel under user preferences and I get no difference. What am I doing wrong? I feel like I’ve missed a checkbox somewhere, as I’ve never had this problem before.

If you’re not using a production monitor, you’ll need to check out the Canvas at 100% precisely to get an idea.
Probably the #1 confusion about FCP around here.

I think this might be my issue. The only difference between this timeline and all others is that this one is DV. Going to try a ProRes timeline.

Be advised that if you output to DV tape, it will once again look like the contents of a baby diaper…since it will get compressed to the DV codec by the deck.

When you add something to the timeline and render, you render to the settings of the timeline. If they are DV, then it will look like DV (which looks like crap compared to 10-bit uncompressed, or even Animation). That is one thing to be aware of.
And proper monitoring, as mentioned.
