Poor quality exports

I’m new to this forum so sorry if this is a post that has been answered elsewhere.
I’m using FC Express, sometimes i’m importing large, good quality jpegs (300dpi) which I fade to black sometimes. However, when I export ( to quicktime “audio and video” and “make movie self contained”,) with no additional compression, the quality of any graphics, pics or stills look like low quality gifs! i.e they have bands of colour lumped together – and on fades the problem is worse – as the picture changes the lines of the bands move across screen etc… (man this hard to explain!)
Okay here’s another example – I had imported a graphic from photoshop (psd). I added a gaussien blur… I automated the blur to be on full blurness at the top of the timeline to no blur a second later. (I was fading in a logo) I did an experiment – I exported the short sequence using every different compression and then no compression – even uncompression 10bit 4.2.2 and here was the result – the blur everytime started as a pixelated collection of rings which moved in waves around the logo on screen until the word finally became visible…
In very basic terms – what I see in FCE – I do not get in Quick Time… It’s driving me crazy! (I’ve tried de-interlace as well – no difference)

P.S. Settings – DV-PAL Anamorphic – importing basic DV tapes (not the best quality to start with but still – I don’t want it to get worse!)

Open one of your exported self contained clips in QT and select:
Window-Movie Properties
Select the video track and then select Visual Settings
In the lower right, is the High Quality Video box selected?
If not, select it. Then close out of the window.
Does this make your movie look better in QT?

Yeah, that doesn’t really make much difference… I think it’s my original file settings which are a problem… I need to capture at 1080p i’ve been capturing at 720… does that make much difference do you think?

You have to capture in whatever format your material is in. You can’t just pick one.
