We are running FCP 5 on a dual 800 G4 with 1.75 RAM, system 10.3.9. Not running so much as limping, or even crawling… And to complicate matters, the project file is huge: 130 mb.
Deleting a clip in the timeline takes a second or two (sometimes even brings up the rainbow circle of death), audio often drops out during playback. Really every operation is sluggish and it seems to be getting worse. Sometimes, the computer can’t even change the pointer into a selected tool.

Adding RAM is an obvious solution. Anything else? Would reinstalling from the ground up help?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ben

More RAM would help, but the issue is your project file size…130MB is HUGE.

Break the project up into smaller parts. I have a two hour show that I am breaking into separate hours. If it gets too laggy, I will break it up by Act.

Can you break up your edit into smaller sections? I run OSX 10.3.9 with 4.5 on a Dual 500 and it runs peachy with 1.38 of ram. Sounds like permissions or file bloat. Try a smaller edit. Dose it react the same? If so, I’d be blaming the OSX. Run Yazu or DoktorKleaner and run permissions. Another idea would be, did it all of a sudden start this? Has it been creeping up?

    Hope this helps-
