I don’t wear glasses, in fact. But maybe it IS time to go in and see if I’m just getting along in years.

Although I can read my screen OK I think that I’m ruining the back of my neck from doing the “Bi-focal Head Bob” for hours a day.
I just ordered a pair of “computer glasses” last night that will focus (thru the upper part of the glasses) on my screen a few feet away and (on the lower half of the glasses) on the keyboard and closer-up items on the desk. Hopefully this will prevent me from completely trashing the vertebrae in my neck.
Yea, life if tough for us “mature” editors…

I’ve done just that (computer bifocals) for the past few years now, and couldn’t be happier…. unless of course I didn’t need them.

That program seems to have a huge potential! ….except you’d have to create a custom skin just for FCP (doesn’t seem to be any readymade ones that you could tweak) and from what I can tell it would take quite some time and patience which us working editors don’t have much to spare.

By the way, for anyone who is experiencing the initial stages of cataracts and is considering surgery, there is a lens implant that will mimic a natural crystal lens.

This means that you’ll regain the ability to “accommodate” different distances as you had years ago. No more reading glasses.

Some opthamologists are suggesting this implant instead of Lasik surgery if the patient is over 50. Everyone will eventually develop cataracts and the thought is that it’s better to go through the trauma of eye surgery just once — rather than get Lasik at a later stage in life, then have to go through cataract surgery several years down the road.

What kind of room are you in? Does it have any windows?

    For your eyes’ sake, in helping reduce strain and eye-fatigue, you need to refocus your eyes frequently;
don’t have them focussed on 1-3 metres (3-10 feet) all day because you work in a small room all day.
So it helps if you have a window to look out of ocassionally, while you work.
    Otherwise, go outside.

Check your posture; are you hunching at all? Even slightly, over many hours can cause headaches.
    So keep that back straight.
Keep your feet flat on the floor and your knees at 90 degrees.

Every hour, no matter how stressed you are, no matter the deadline, no matter who’s with you, stop work, get off the chair and do some basic stretching.
Stand tall and reach for the ceiling and look straight up, too.

And don’t do as I do, do as I say!

You don’t get a body like mine overnight: – it takes years of neglect!

    cheers.

    Neil.

I do stretching several times a day while editing. Usually it’s to reach a new coffee cup on the top shelf above the coffee maker. I then do several repetitions of wrist exercises while stiring in the artifical creamer. And then, ten or fifteen minutes later, I do some leg exercises while walking to the bathroom to get rid of the afore mentioned coffee.
I do however use a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse to save wear and tear on the wrists. Work smart!
Sigh, such is the life of the video editor…

You can always do the ctrl-shift-option + 8
That is press control, shift and option, then hit the 8 key.

Obviously you will need an external viewing montior to see your footage correctly 😉
