    Working in 1920 x 1280 – XDCAM EX 1080i – FCP 7.0.2

Spent all day yesterday creating 1280 x 1080i png slides and dropping them on the timeline (over a guy giving the talk).

Yesterdays slides all gave a dark green (Full) render colour code and preview without rendering.

However, todays slides, created from exactly the same PS template and saved to png in exactly the same way are all coming up red and need rendering unless I switch to Unlimited RT where they show orange.

Can anyone shed any light on this weirdness. I have tried trawling the archive.

    Many thanks

    Hi James,
This may happens because you are putting a lot of stills in your sequence.
Try increasing the “Stills cache”; in the preferences.

    Hi,

That seems to have done the trick. Many thanks.

Funny thing is that when I cranked it up first to 50% then to 100% nothing happened but when I dropped back to 25% (orginally 10%) it came good.

    Thanks again.

Yeah, the pref settings for these options are really unclear and badly in need of an update.

Basically, if you set the “still cache” too high (over 32%, IIRC) then FCP will not be able to set aside the RAM required. It will simply disable the still cache and not give a warning.

The solution is to turn DOWN the “application cache,” which will then let you set the still cache higher.

I was mucking around with my still frame cache today and realized I misspoke in my earlier post. If you turn down the application memory cache, the still frame cache goes down as well, since it is just a percent of the overall application cache. Duh…

Anyway, I don’t seem to be able to allocate more then 750 megs of RAM to still frames, at least on my machine at my current gig: G5, os 10.4.11, fcp 6.0.6

Anybody else have better luck setting a higher cache?
