    Hello,

I’m new to this forum and wish everybody a good day. I’m from Germany, so my English is not always correct, but I will try my best:)

I have a very confusing problem with plugins in FCP.

I used to use the Nattress plugin sets “Film Effects” and “Standards Conversion” and some freeware plugins in FCP 5. Last project I used them on was done in June. I don’t remember the Mac OS version at that time, but the OS has been updated several times since.

Meanwhile I upgradet to FCP 6 (Final Cut Studio 2) and by now almost all of the third party plugins I have including the ones from Nattress have disappeared from the various menus in FCP, for example the Effects/Video Filters menu.

All the filters are still in the same folder as before: /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins

I tried the following: moving everything out of the plugins folder and back in piece by piece. First I tried “Film Effects” and it showed up in the Effects/Video Filters menu. Then I moved “Standards Conversion” back into the plugins folder but this one didn’t show up. Next I removed “Film Effects” again, then “Standards Conversion” was there in the Video Filters menu. That means I can have one set but not both. Very confusing and – very, very frustrating! They used to be there both.

My system is a PowerMac G5 Quad with nVidia 7800 graphics card (that hardware has not been changed since the time everything worked fine, exept the graphics card has been replaced on warranty because of a suspected problem with it), running Mac OS 10.4.11 by now and the latest version of Final Cut Studio (FCP is at 6.0.2).

All the plugins are in /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins. Isn’t that the correct place?

Yesterday I tried reinstalling everything from scratch with no success. What to do? Downgrading? FCP or the OS? Or both? I have no idea where to start.

Is this problem known to anybody?. Any hint is appreciated

Thanks alot for your kind help.

    Greetings from Germany.

    Hi Andrea,
I think the best is that you send this same post to Graeme Nattress. He will answer you quickly.

Thanks Rafael, I have done so.

Meanwhile I continued experimenting and it seems that I have my plugins back, at least for now. I hope they will stay…

    Here’s what I did:

I re-downloaded the Nattress plugins and put these one by one into the plugins folder. This time they both appeared in FCP’s Video Filters Menu. So far so good. I don’t know what the difference is since the re-downloaded plugs are the same versions.

Then I continued by adding my freeware plugins but I did not re-download any of them. Next I put the one called “50 Point Garbage Matte” back in. This made all Nattress plugins disappear. Instead the Garbage Matte filter showed up. So I removed it and the Nattress plugins reappeared in the menu.

I thought, this filter might be bad and set it aside. Then I continued to add all of the remaining plugins and they all showed up properly in FCP.

Just to verify that the Garbage Matte plugin was the problem, I moved it back in the plugins folder and – it showed up in the menu without making all the others disappear this time!

    I don’t understand this.

It seems it made a difference in what order I added the plugins. Very strange indeed.

Furthermore it seems my Nattress plugs had become corrupted somehow since the re-downloaded ones now worked without making eachother disapper. I have no idea what happened. If someone can explain all that, I will be very thankful:)

Anyway I will not touch the plugins folder again as long as everything stays in place.

    Greetings.

just a guess, but it seems osx is very funny about permissions.
perhaps somehow the permissions of the plugins folder you moved about had changed when you upgraded, and fcp did not have access to them?
    just a wild guess…

Yes, permissions could cause some trouble. In my case they seemed to be ok. I have the habit of repairing permissions on a regular basis using Cocktail.

As mentioned before, my problem seems to come from corrupted plugins. Replacing some of them with newly downloaded copies solved the issue.
