  • plugin compressor in Avid..?

hello, I’m making some tv-programs with some guys talking in studio. I want to use a compressor for the audio, so that I don’t have to fix manually every time they talk too loud or too low.

I read on a forum that the Avid Compressor is not very good, and that the best would be to buy a plugin. Is there anyone who knows what I eventually should buy, and how much this costs..?

    Any other suggestions..?

    Have a nice day.. =)

That’s a little bit of a shot in the dark question, as different editors have different audio workflows and software preferences. I’m fond of Adobe audition for final sweetening. It’s not a plugin so you will have to export/import and layback.

    However:

1-The built-in compressor works OK, it just doesn’t have the nicest interface to view levels as you’re compressing. The real problem with Avid’s audio interface is its destructive nature which forces you to bounce tracks if you want to apply more than one effect at a time.

2-If the discrepancy in levels is that large, your final product will ultimately benefit from evening the levels out before you compress and/or limit. If (hopefully) the mics were recorded on separate tracks, work on them individually before you cut them into the sequence.

The Compressor in Avid works okay, if you know what you’re doing, but it’s a little cumbersome to use. Avid isn’t well suited to Audio editing on the timeline really – I have, in the past, exported selected segments to either Adobe Audition or Audacity to apply sweetening effects, but generally I try an encourage clients to get a proper sound mix.

If you are disciplined in the way you lay your tracks out (1-4 Dialogue Only, 5-6 SFX/SOT, 7-10 Music, etc) then you can export them two at a time to some external multi-track editor and sort of re-assemble them.
