September 9, 2011 at 3:39 pmThis honestly looks like everything asked for on this board, aside from audio rendering. Amazing.

September 9, 2011 at 7:44 pmAmong all the great stuff in this release – and there is a myriad of great stuff – I didn’t see any mention of wider Quicktime codec support, in particular, Quicktime wrapped DNxHD. Any word on that?
BTW, this isn’t a criticism in the least. Just about everything I wanted is in this release, my hat is off to the Resolve development team.

September 9, 2011 at 8:57 pmJust got this in an email. Very exciting indeed;
The new Resolve 8.1 Software Update includes new layer note composite effects, ACES colorspace support, compatibility for Avid AAF and round trip with Avid Media Composer™, Final Cut Pro 7 clip size and position support, new copy commands for grades, upgraded EDL features, support for UltraStudio 3D for Thunderbolt and compatibility with the MacBook Pro 15” Hi Res computer.
DaVinci Resolve 8.1 now includes new layer node composite effects which offer colorists even greater creative grading with add, subtract, difference, multiply, screen, overlay, darker and lighten effects. Colorists will be able to use these new composite effects to create extremely complex and intricate grades with limitless power.
DaVinci Resolve 8.1 now includes ACES colorspace support. ACES and IIF is a new colorspace and file format promoted by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences technology committee to provide a universal and open image interchange and processing format.
To improved compatibility with customers using Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve 8.1 now includes improved support for Avid AAF import/export for roundtrip editing to Resolve and back to Avid Media Composer. This new AAF support includes effects such as dip to color, edge and center wipe with border, clock and venetian blind wipe and also cross, oval and diamond iris wipe, overlay composite and more. Also includes support for Avid sizing with (PTZR) pan, tilt, zoom and rotate.
Additional support is included for Final Cut Pro 7 round trip with clip by clip selectable import of image sizing data now possible. Import sizing and position data for all or selected clips is also available.
New cut, copy and paste operations for editing and node metadata including dynamics have been added to DaVinci Resolve 8.1 allowing editing of clips in the timeline and copying grades between nodes is much easier and dramatically faster. DaVinci Resolve 8.1 also includes new conform features including export missing clips EDL and importing new EDL to a track. This simplifies finding and replacing missing clips in long form projects, and is great for changing VFX shots. There is also an exciting new ‘hover over node’ grading status display to reveal a list of changed grades within the node.
Lastly Resolve now adds compatibility with the Apple Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15” with 1680×1050 display as well as the new UltraStudio 3D for Thunderbolt technology based computers. Support for UltraStudio 3D allows video monitoring and deck I/O from the latest iMac and MacBook Pro computers that support Thunderbolt technology.
This is quite a big update, and it’s due to release sometime later this month, and will be available free for download from the Blackmagic Design web site.

DaVinci Resolve for Windows
This is exciting news, and we have worked so hard to be able to offer a new DaVinci Resolve for Windows. DaVinci Resolve for Microsoft Windows will allow a wide range of hardware for building color correction systems with the advantage of a wider selection of GPU processing options with support for up to a massive 16 GPU’s per system.
The good news is that anyone who has bought a DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design will get this update free because the Mac OS X dongle can be used for both Mac and Windows. When DaVinci Resolve for Windows is released, it will be included with the Mac OS X version, so you can choose which platform you want to install on, and move back and forward as you need. This provides a lot more flexibility, and if you have wanted to take advantage of more GPU power without the complexity of Linux, then this is a good option.
We will have DaVinci Resolve on Windows showing at the IBC booth, and you can see it running and ask questions of the engineers. We are planning a release for Q1 next year, and it will be available for download by all current customers as well.
DaVinci Resolve Linux Price Reduction
Another exciting development is, from now on, DaVinci Resolve Linux will be included at no extra cost with any DaVinci Resolve control surface, allowing you to choose between installing on Mac OS X, Linux and soon Windows when building your color correction system.
Previously DaVinci Resolve on Linux was an additional US$19995 charge on top of the cost of a DaVinci Resolve, and now this cost will be eliminated. If you have a modern DaVinci Resolve control surface then you can request a copy of DaVinci Resolve for Linux by contacting one of our sales offices.
DaVinci Resolve for Linux will still need to be installed by an experienced Linux engineer, however if you buy DaVinci Resolve, you will now be able to choose between operating systems depending on the processing power they need. You get all platforms, so you can even move between systems as you need.
DaVinci Resolve for Linux will be included in the DaVinci Resolve product box, and because the Mac OS X version and the Linux version will include separate licenses, if you want to install the Linux version, then you could still use the Mac OS X version to build a second grading system, perhaps on a laptop for on set work. This gives you the ultimate choice.
