I’ve wasted most of this morning trying to remember and also searching online how to make a grad ND filter in AE. It is beyond me why this filter doesn’t natively exist in the program.

I thought it had to do with creating a black solid then reducing opacity and blending, but can’t figure it out. Further I can’t figure out how to feather the blend.

Obviously I’m no AE expert and yet it is a crucial part of my workflow for the small needs I have.

I would generally use a 50% gray to white Ramp applied to a solid with the Multiply blend mode in a linear working space. If that sounds like a string of unfamiliar words then I’d recommend:

    1) create an Adjustment Layer.
    2) apply the Exposure effect and set the Exposure value to -1 (one stop down).
    3) apply a rectangular mask to the Adjustment Layer. Position it as desired.
    4) Increase the vertical feather on the mask.

If you need more details write back and we can expand on this.

Thanks so much for that detailed explanation! It sounds clear enough to figure out but I had to run an errand and won’t be able to try until later.

I appreciate the help and offering to follow up. I will write later if I need more details but hope to not have to bother you. Thanks!
