  • Please recommend a codec for HD/HDV animation project

I’ll need to work on an animation project at resolution 720p/24fps and 1080p/24fps.

For SD, I’ve done several projects using Microsoft DV Codec with AfterEffects and editing with Premiere Pro on a fast CPU like Intel C2D, and without any editing card like Matrox, Pinnacle.

For the HDV/HD, I hope to find a good codec but couldn’t afford Cineform because it is too expensive and charges per CPU. Any one please recommend me a codec for me?

    Thanks in advance.

Quicktime Animation codec? It is specifically designed for animation.

Really? Aspect costs like $500, Neo can be purchased for $250. You should expect to invest something when working in HD.

It kind of depends on how you are using the codec. Premiere has HDV built in. If you need a codec that you can render out of your animation software, you can use Avid’s software DNxHD codec, which can be brought into Premiere. You can’t really edit with it natively, since it is a .mov file, so you will have to render your footage when you drop it into your HDV project, but it is usable in programs like Combustion and Maya, which might not recognize HDV .m2v footage. It’s not a perfect solution, and it takes up a minimum of 145Mbps, but it is free.
