  • please help / trying to import 16:9 footage

Posted by Ron Hansen on April 13, 2005 at 4:50 pm

I’ve captured footage from my Canon GL2 in the 16:9 format (in 24fps) and i’m trying to find the correct settings in FCP for this format. I have tried all of the available settings in the “Settings” menu, but none seem to be exactly correct. I try creating a custom setting to 720 x 480, and this is close, but when I drop my clips in, there is excess black space on the left and right of my clip. why does this clip not fill this frame??

appreciate any help i can get.

    Thanks.

You need to check the anamorphic setting.

When you say excess black, do you mean like 40% extra or 3 – 5% extra black on either side? If the latter, you’re okay. Not all cameras fill the entire frame from edge to edge, yet still stay on the safe side of what will be broadcast and within the NTSC/PAL standards for 16:9.

After having checked that your settings/timeline is set to anamorphic, you could also check that your preview and output “show as sqr. pixels” is not checked (in the zoom % tab)

    24fps? GL2? I’m sorry…that does not compute. The GL2 doesn’t shoot 24P. The XL2 does though.
Try an Easy Setup for DV NTSC at 29.97.

Hey, I’m having the same problem, I shot panasonic 24p. I’ve looked over my capture settings, sequence settings, and preview settings and they all match up. The strange thing though is that the problem suddenly started, and I haven’t changed any settings. This leads me to believe that it has to do something with the clips. My capture settings haven’t changed, and I’ve looked over the original video and it’s definitely 16:9. I’m about to try recapturing on the hope it was just a fluke, but I’m totally boggled, any thoughts?

Did you check your clips infos (once captured) to see if they were set to anamorphic… there should be a check mark…I’ve captured once in 16:9, the clips came out square and when I looked at the file’s infos in the browser, the aspect ratio was set to 16:9, but the anamorphic box wasn’t checked.
