My preference is to use Sony Vegas 7, is this a good or bad pc build? Would it be suitable if I chose to use Premiere CS3?

I’m probably only going to us standard definition editing for home/wedding/family function vids, but what if I wanted to do HD editing? Thanks

    Asus P5WDH Deluxe
    2.6g E6700 dual core
ONBOARD SOUND – Not adding a sound card
    3 harddrives
    ASUS EAX1950PRO/HTDP/256M/A graphics card
    firewire card
DAC-200 – to take care of capture of analogue & monitoring of timeline

    I don’t need a capture card do I?
Am I likely to run into any problems?

My inputs will be from a dv camera also analogue inputs.
I would like to monitor the timeline on a tv

Your help would be appreciated. Of course I am on a small budget and I have settled on this configuration so please don’t confuse matters unless you think it is really necessary. My head is in a spin already.

Looks good. Be sure to get at least 1gig of RAM, 2gig would be better.

[newbyjonathan] “DAC-200 – to take care of capture of analogue & monitoring of timeline”

This is the DV Converter that I use and like it very much.
I use it to capture analog sources such as Hi-8 tapes.
I also use it to external preview the timeline to a video monitor.

    [newbyjonathan] “I don’t need a capture card do I?”

Not for what you want to do. For DV and HDV you plug your camera into your firewire port for capture.

    [newbyjonathan] “3 harddrives”

Very good. It is always good to not capture to your system drive.
Given the choice, your capture drive should be the biggest fastest one your have.

You will get good performance from the dual core proc. that you selected.

    Regards, Rick.

I totally second what Rick said, and add this pearl: You seem very concerned with processor speed, but processors have not really been a big bottleneck ,when it comes to working with DV, for a few years now… the culprit is Hard Drive I/O. Look into a good RAID, whether you build an internal one or buy an external one you will notice the difference much sooner than with getting a fast processor. Vegas is a much less resource hungry program than any of Adobe’s applications, so it won’t eat up your processor. Again, be sure to make a preemptive strike on sluggish data I/O by adding a RAID to your list.

Thank you for your prompt answers. Sorry I didn’t come back and say sooner, but I did look! Info gratefully received.
