Please Help!! Kona LHe tape trouble
Hello everyone,
I humbly request your help in solving my problem.
We just got a new Final Cut Pro system which we bought from a company who puts them together and we’ve been having problems capturing to 8-bit uncompressed.
We’re using a Kona LHe card with the KL Breakout box. We have it connected to a Sony DVW-M2000 using the SDI connection. We also are using the component output on the box to connect it to an external monitor. For control we’re using an rs-422 cable.
For software we’re running Final Cut 6.0.2 using Quicktime 7.3.1
I’m also running reference to everything.
I’ve been trying to capture the video by logging it and then batch capturing and have not been successful. The place on the tape where I get the error message is different every time, but it always give me the same message. “Tape Trouble. Check VTR. Do not attempt to eject tape or use transport without checking VTR first.” I have also gotten timecode breaks as an issue as well so I’m curious if it has something to do with the timecode. I’ve tried using a seperate deck (a Sony MSW-M2100) and have gotten the same problem.
I’m sure I’m using the correct easy setup so I don’t know what the issue is. I’ve even tried going down the list of device control presets to see if one of them would work, but to no avail.
I hope someone out there can help me out so I can stop grinding my teeth and actually get work done. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately it’s not that easy. I’ve contacted them and they said that because the system was put together for us more than 2 months ago, they’ve since lost the guy who put it together and now are not sure about the setup he created because there’s no paperwork anywhere on our system.

I believe AJA has a fix for this issue. They have terrific support and can usually tell users how to fix problems in two mintes that would otherwise take hours of troubleshooting. Give them a call…

Call AJA and tell them of your problem and they will send you a plugin to disable that warning.

I get that message at times when capturing from our DSR-1500. I do have the VTR polling plug installed BTW. I finally isolated the problem to the deck being set EE to the SDI input with no digital input connected. If I watch the deck’s output, it will “un-mute” the SDI input once in a while and will display digital “snow”. For whatever reason under these conditions, it will throw the error message during capture. It won’t do it all of the time, but will generate the error message every now and then. All I needed to do to fix the situation is to switch on the decks internal signal generator rather than leave the deck set to the SDI input with no input connected. If I do this, I won’t get the error while capturing. Try to take your deck out of the EE mode and if possible have a stable video input signal going to it at all times. If your deck “un-mutes” while capturing with your Kona connected to the input and the output at the same time, a feedback loop will occur momentarily and could cause the VTR’s servos to unlock for an instant and generate an error message back to the FCP computer.
Also, go give your VAR a good kick in the pants for their lack of support. My 2¢ worth.

I do not have E-E mode on so that is definitely not the issue and I have called AJA but they haven’t called me back in 3 hours.
On another note I did get ahold of the company that created our system again and there seems to have been a misunderstanding as the guy who created my system is still there and was very helpful although we haven’t figured out the issue. If anyone has any more ideas please let me know. -

Thanks to all who responded to my post. We were finally able to get ahold of AJA and they gave me the infamous DisableAltETTPolling patch. I thought that was only a problem with Panasonic decks, but it is not so.

It’s an FCP thing, as far as I understand it.
