  • Please help: I need to reformat a Lacie NT formatted drive for use on my edit system

Posted by Dave Sullivan on February 23, 2007 at 3:20 pm

    Hello All,

A elderly client has just given me a Lacie 500gb NTFS formatted hard drive, that he wants me to use to save the video project I’m working on for him.
The only problem is….’Disk Utility’ can see the drive, and it mounts on the desktop, but I’m unable to reformat it because the drive is read only, (I’m aware that this is normal under OSX).
Does anyone out there know how I can reformat the drive for use on my Mac? The project is huge, and burning the project onto DVD’s is not an option. There must be a simple way to do it.
    Many thanks in advance.

    All the best

    Dave

Get info on the drive and change the ownership and permissions so that everyone can read and write, then try and erase it.

    Hi
Use Disk Utility to create a new Partition, then you will be able to format it.

    Hey guys,

Many thanks indeed for your responces.

The only problem is…..under OSX you can see the drive, and it mounts, but you are unable to change anything because OSX treats it as a ‘read only’ device.
When you open up Get info, you can see the drive icon, etc, but because the drive is read only you are unable to unlock it, (It doesn’t give you the option).
I’ll be honest with you….why can’t there be a simple way to do it!! It’s doing my head in!!

So when you open disk utility, you can’t click erase? i have never seen that before.

    Hi
Since there isn’t a valid Mac partition Erase can’t work, so that option will be greyed out.
What I would expect is that if you select the Drive Icon, not the Volume Icon, in the list on the left,
then on selecting the Partition Tab, the drop-down Volume Scheme Menu that says Current can be changed to 1 Partition.
Then (only then) do you get the option to reformat the drive using Mac HFS+.
