  • Please help, footage keeps needing to be re-rendered

Posted by Keith Herman on January 5, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Ok, I’ve been working on final cut pro for years and I have not ever had this problem before. One day i started working on my project for work and found that rendering is taking forever… about 55 mins for 1 min worth of 720p footage on a mac pro with 16gb of ram. It used to take about a minute or less. Also, after i wait the 55 mins for it to render, i can run through my footage just fine, but when i open up another program and then go back to FCP, the files go red and need to be re-rendered again. You can imagine how frustrating this must be, especially when it take 4 hours to do something that should take 5 mins.

I’ve tried making new projects…. I’ve tried relocating the media and still no luck.

I would greatly appreciate any help someone could give me. I can answer back quickly to posting very quickly.

720p footage. Final cut version 6.0.5.

the footage is HDV. it is quicktime movie format. I’ve never had this problem before…

If you dont know of a way to fix it, could you tell me how to basically start over and create a new project so that I can avoid this issue im having?

I am having exactly the same problem in 6.05 and again using a top end Powermac.

I am currently setting up another PowerMac to see if it also happens on a totally new installation.

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline

Shane’s Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?

Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.

However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.

The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.

Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:

This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.
