PLEASE HELP!! Errors in burn – & I can’t find the culprit
Hello all from the deep freeze here in Minnesota. This is my situation, and I’ll give as many details as I can and I’ll appreciate your suggestions, advice, anything. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE. This is my first post though I’ve read a number of them in the past. OK, these are the details. Powerbook G4 FCPHD as well as an imac g4 that I’ve also used for burning some discs. I have a firewire 800 external HD for media. In Final Cut Pro HD I’ve got a timeline with 1 hour 45 minutes of footage. All very straightforward w/ 2-4 tracks vid/audio. I’ve got a total of three timelines of approx. the same length (to be three DVD’s). I’m using iDVD 5.
I have yet to successfully burn the project 1 (first film). The 2nd and 3rd projects/timelines all burned successfully, without a hitch and are completed. All three of these were in the same open project. So this is what I’ve done with the first project. I exported out of FCP HD first as not self-contained, and then after all the encoding/burn (it was early morning and didn’t see it end) the message left on screen was ‘burn finished – some errors were found in burn process’. I then moved project to my imac g4 (self-contained movie) and used iDVD 5 and after the encoding… same exact error message. With a TOTALLY BLANK dvd-r. Doesn’t burn a thing. I talked to FCP support guy and then watched the exported film in Quicktime and it was not smooth, it was catching frames though audio seemed fine. I trashed my pref’s and re-exported and the film ‘appeared’ fine — from simply viewing it in QT. But I’m no expert – –
So I tried to burn again — and after it all, same message. ‘burn finished – some errors were found in burn process’.
WHAT DO I DO NOW? I just don’t know what to even consider. I’m basically a semi-new user, having only done a few projects in FCP — so your advice will be very much appreciated!!!
I wondered if there were dropped frames or something like that in there, how would I find it?? Please help!

The problem might very well be a corrupt render file in FCP. Corrupt render files often don’t rear there ugly little heads until you try to do a DVD burn. Uneless someone has another suggestion you might try navigating to your project render folder and dragging the contents to the trash. Start FCP and tell it it render everything again, even the audio if you did anything there too. It may be only one render file that’s causing trouble, but by the time you figured out which one it was it would probably be faster just to render everything again. Then make a new self-contained QT movie and encode/burn that with iDVD.
A classic example of a bad render file is when the DVD build process stops cold at a certain place every time. Like at a certain percentage point of the encoding process. This is what happens in DVD Studio Pro, but iDVD may react differently. You have stated however, that you were able to complete the build and it wasn’t unill you tried to burn the DVD that nothing happened. This is a new one on me, but then again, this may be what iDVD does when it encounters problems. When you moved the project over to your iMac did you use that computer’s version of iDVD or was it the same one you used before? i.e. if you have the 2 Macs connected through ethernet and were able to use the same copy of iDVD. Trying to determine if two copies of iDVD had the same issues with the one bad project.
Anyway, I have to go and will be out of the office for most of the day, so you’re on your own unless someone else reads this and offers thier insight.
