This has happened countless times before, infact I cant remember a single time i havent had problems rendering with vegas.

I need to render to widescreen for a dvd. I render the whole project, and when i play it with media player, the screen is like a square (the image has black borders around it). When i go into preferences, etc i notice that the NTSC widescreen format is 720 by 480. Last time i checked, widescreen is 16:9, and if you calculate through, 720 by 480 does not simplify down to 16:9.

the other thing that i remembered is that i had rendered part of the project previously (so that I would have 1 clip all put together) which i then put into a new project to continue editing. That render worked fine.

    what am I doing wrong!?

i’ll stay up all night, but this has to be done by tomorrow morning

When you are naming the file click the stretch to window size option

i would also like to know why the preview window shows something different than what the render comes out to be. Dont get me wrong, i love vegas, but there is something screwed up with how they did their render function.

ok, i tried the stretch to window thing… I got different results depending on the template i used and other settings i used. I understand that i can search this, but i am under a ton a pressure and it would be nice if someone could walk me through all the settings I need.

    Forget Media Player.
Burn a DVD and check it on a TV set.
As long as you render to a widescreen template, it should play back in widescreen mode.
    Use a DVD-RW if you’re not 100% certain.

Video does not always use square pixels so you can’t just multiply the width and height and get 16:9. You have to take the Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) into account. This means that the pixels do no represent a square like on your computer screen but rather a rectangle. At 720 x 480 NTSC widescreen (16:9) has a PAR of 1.2121. If you do the math, you’ll see that 720 x 1.2121 = 873 wide. So NTSC widescreen is really 873×480 in square pixels which is almost 16:9.

As for your rendering problem, it is important to keep everything in the same aspect. Your project should be NTSC Widescreen, and all of you media should be cropped for widescreen and your final render should be NTSC Widescreen. This is the only way to keep everything looking correctly.
