  • Please help! editing XDCAM 23.98 and AIFF audio needs render because of timebase?

    Hi all,

I’m editing a 23.98 XDCAM sequence as most of my footage was shot 24p on an EX-1. Previous project done on this computer was HDV PAL at 25fps.

    Using FCP 6.0.5

Trying to import a music cue bought on Itunes and cut into sequence a number of ways and it always needs rendering.

Have exported cue as AIFF (using both Compressor and exporting with Quicktime Conversion – set to stereo, 48k, both 16 and 24 bit) and everytime I cut it in it needs rendering (even if the clip is “by itself” with no other audio playing at the same time) which is just a ridiculous way to work.

The problem seems to relate to the timebase, because if I cut the audio into a brand new sequence it plays just fine – at 25 fps which was my prior sequence preset.

But there does not seem to be an option to change framerate when creating the AIFF either in Compressor or just exporting with QT Conversion, so how in the world did this file bought this morning from ITunes acquire a framerate of 25fps and how do I change that or cut it into my 23.98 without needing to render?

I know I must be missing something.

I do have FCP 7 sitting on my desk but had been working in 6 and didn’t want to switch midstream.

Will that help me out at all?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I have “solved” my own mystery…

By changing my sequence preset and then exporting the m4a to AIFF using QT conversion and then importing, I can cut into my 23.98 sequence no problem…

But that doesn’t explain why your sequence preset matters when exporting from the browser window (it shouldn’t) or why compressor (which I did not open through FCP) converted files were having the same problem.

Haven’t gone into Compressor yet (I do want to set up an applet so I don’t have to touch buttons on future AIFF conversions) to test it out. I’ve blown enough time on this one already.

    Will post when I do.

Any further enlightenment on the whys of all this very welcome.

    Hi Jim,

Although audio files are sample rate based, not frame rate based, Final Cut will assign a frame rate to AIFF files when you import them, based on the default sequence preset you have selected in the Audio/Video Settings. My hunch is you had a 25 fps sequence set as your default when you imported your file, which caused problems when you tried to put it in a 23.98 sequence.

Next time you import AIFF files, make sure you set your default sequence preset (or your “easy setup” for that matter) to match your working timeline settings and you should be good to go. Here’s some other threads on this with more info:

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for your help. For the life of me I couldn’t imagine how these files “became” 25 fps but now I know.

    Much obliged.

Wow. I had no idea! Now I finally know why I sometimes struggle with audio sync or need to render certain imported audio files in some projects. This has at times been driving me mad. Thanks Matt!
