    The built-in deinterlacers of Premiere, Vegas, etc. do not detect
    motion and also cut down the vertical resolution to about half.

    DVFilm Maker and other smart deinterlacers
    try to preserve full vertical resolution in areas of the screen
    where there is no motion.

    One last question Markus, if I may… When I capture clean progressive DV footage, it streams as interlaced, but doesn’t need to be de-interlaced in order to get progressive DV back I suppose. Does the NLE still throw away one field or does it detect the frame cadence in order to keep the fields belonging to the same frame, together? Or is the field order to be specified in this case.

    No, all NLE’s store video on a frame-by-frame basis. Not field by field, not even if it’s interlaced.

    Deinterlacing progressive footage would not be good.

    Doesn’t need to do anything because the 2 fields are always stored together.

    Thanks, but what I am confused about, is why the two fields stored together belong to the same frame in a continious upper, lower…field stream. Couldn’t it happen that the last field from frame n and the first field from frame n+1 are stored as couples?

    Please, one more clarification for my sanity:

    1. Above you said if I shoot 30p in a Canon XL2 I should capture the footage in a 60i project? If so, will motion graphics imported from AE 7.0 still look OK? Also, will cross fades, disolves look OK?

    2. Someone on the DVI thread for a similar question also stated that for those of us shooting 30p in a Canon XL2 that we should be able to capture in the 30i lower fields project setting and then just make sure to export the final file for web, dvd, whatever, as “progressive”. Is this also true? Will motion graphics and transitions look OK?

    Thanks a ton as I really like to shoot in 30p and don’t want to be hamstrung.

    I’m going to defer these questions to experts on Premiere.

    But except for the 30P setting in the camera, capture, project and export settings need to all agree to avoid unintentional effects.
