    Hi,

I just got Sony Vegas 8. I want to expand my options for video editing over the basic “Sonic” and “windows Movie Maker” that came with my computer.

I read thru the manual and tried doing a basic task – opening an AVI file created by my DV camera and Rendering it as a WMV file. I don’t even need to do any editing. I just want to Render (convert) the file and post it on YouTube.

I seem to have run into a snag. When I am looking at the rendering options, and select WMV. There are NO templates for that file type. So I can choose WMV but when I try to save it, I get an error message saying there are no templates.

So how/where do I get a WMV template for rendering?

Then I noticed something even worse… for some reason, now the WMV option is completely gone. When I go back to Render As , there are now less optios and WMV is not even an option.

    Am I missing something obvious?

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks
    Gary in Vermont

    You can go 2 ways:
    1. Render as -> Main Concept AVC/AAC (.mp4) then
Template Choose: Ipod 320×240 or 640×480
this will give you mp4 files that can be uploaded to Utube.

    2. Rander as -> Quick Time 7 (.mov) then
Template: choices between 28.8 kbs to 3 Mbps
this choice will give you .MOV files playable by both QT player and MS Media player. This too can most likely to be uploaded to Utube.

But I think he would like to know what happened to his .wmv choice.

thanks, but I’d really like to make a WMV file. Is this not supported by Vegas? It’s weird that it was there at first, but no templates for it, and then it just disappeared.

I have read that WMV gives the best quality Youtube videos, and for other reaons I’d like to be able to create WMVs.

    Is WMV supported?

    thanks

    hello Gary,
Vegas *does* support WMV, not sure why your templates are deleted? When you look at the render options, you don’t see *any* wmv options?

BTW, MP4 is often better for Utube, depends on the content. We experimented heavily with various bitrates when working on the “Video For The Web” training DVD, and found that it’s a myth that Utube likes WMV best. it depends on the content, and bitrate. MP4 from Vegas Pro 8 does a slightly better job with motion, and wmv does a slightly better job with color, based on our findings.

thanks for the good info about mp4 and youtube.

to answer your question – sometimes there is an option for WMV but not templates, and it won’t let me render. other times WMV is not even there (and it seems like most of the options are audio only). I thought maybe I just had the audio track selected and that caused the wmv to disappear, but I made sure I had everything selected and it still wasn’t there. I guess I need to fiddle with it more.

Having too problems with Vegas Pro8a at my laptop: Can´t render in mpg (don´t have this “save as” option), neither have the DVD Architect template !! See what my Render Options show :https://wikisend.com/download/195716/Vegas Pro8a Save as.jpg and https://wikisend.com/download/947300/Vegas Pro8a Templates.jpg

I used Vegas 6 at my PC and NEVER had this problem. Tried to copy the File Templates carpet to C:\Users\Lucia\AppData\Roaming\Sony and got NO result. Tried same thing at …AppData\Local\Sony and nothing again (Help file at Vegas pro uses c:\Docs&Settings\\Application Data\Sony\File Template\\ as reference, but I use Vista now in my laptop and couldn´t find WHERE I should put my old templates so as to make Vegas Pro 8 to render as it should ! Some help ?

I do have the plug-ins (mpg, ac3 etc) installed at my machine,(look here:https://wikisend.com/download/925718/Vegas 8a Plug-ins.jpg) but somehow Vegas Pro isn´t reading them (I couldn´t find ANY of the *sft files for the templates doing a search in C , that is to say, I have the plu-ins but don´t have the templates from day zero!!)

I´ve uninstalled, restarted, installed again and nothing changes…What is happening ??? Help pleaseeeee ! 🙁

Do you have DVD Architect installed?
If you don’t, there’s no way you’ll be able to render to MPEG,
If you do, you have to select “MainConcept MPEG-2 (*.mpg, etc. etc.) in the “Save as type” dropdown box.

Yes Mike, I do have DVD Architect (4.5a) on my laptop. But the problem is just this: I DON´T have the “Save As” option of the “MainConcept MPEG-2 (*.mpg, etc. etc.) ” to choose (see please the pictures I uploaded that shows what I have – although the plug-ins for mcplug ARE THERE !!!!) I´m really confused here… Thanks for ANY help 🙂

    Something is very strange here.
When you click in the “save as type” box, MPEG-2 should be the 8th item on the list.

    ATRAC audio
    Audio Interchange File Format
    Dolby Digital AC-3 Pro
    Dolby Digital AC-3 Studio
    FLAC
    MainConcept AVC/AAC
    MainConcept MPEG-1
    MainConcept MPEG-2

All I can suggest at this point is to contact Sony Customer Service and see if they have any ideas.
    Sorry 🙁

Thanks anyway…I know it´s VERY STRANGE – my old Vegas 6 had it all…!I´m going to uninstall ALL Sony products at my laptop, and try to install again and see what happens…(What makes me mad is that I can´t go back to my Vegas 6 to render the veg file created at Vegas Pro (it´s unrecognisable by Vegas 6 !) Argh…@#*@&# !!
