  • Please Advise: Hardware/Software question about Avid Media Composer 8.4.5

Posted by David Carr on March 8, 2017 at 4:42 am

I have a custom built Mac running an intel i7 sandy bridge with 32gb of RAM. I want to install Avid Media Composer 8.4.5 and cut 2k footage of off a firewire 800 drive.

question 1: can the i7 Sandy Bridge with 32gb of RAM handle the 2K footage? I think it should be fine, right?

question 2: what OS is compatible for 8.4.5? does it run on 10.12.3 Sierra?

question 3: what is the minimum Graphics card set up on this system^ cutting 2K?

    thanks for any input.

    Yes.

That’s a TAD too new for that version. I’d stick to 10.10 or 10.11 on your Hack for that version of Avid…

Avid doesn’t really utilize the GPU like Resolve or Premiere. So it won’t come into play here. Drive speed will, and FW800 will be cutting it a tad close..that’s your biggest bottleneck. Just transcode the footage to ProRes MXF or DNxHD and you should be fine.

    Shane,

    Thanks for the advice.

Here’s a follow up, I know Sierra is only supported for Avid 8.6.5 , but do you think 8.4.5 will Run at least on Sierra? Or is it anyone’s guess?

Anyone’s guess. The only person who will know will be the first one to try it.
