  • Playing out to dv w/fire wire

    Hello,

    Thanks for reading this.

I’ve been trying to play out my 40min project onto my camcorder (it has DV in/out) via firewire with FCP4.

It plays out audio fine, it does NOT play pictures though.

All the setting seem to be ok (DV Pal 48khz). I have digitized using that same camera and fire wire connection (so that works fine). I have played out from quick time through fire wire, and it worked fine (so the dv in works too) I have also tried playing out to a dv deck and nothing played out either.

I have a deadline coming up soon and I don’t know what else to try.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Nicolas

If you can play out to the camera OK (and use it’s analog outputs to a TV or Monitor to make sure) you could just hit record and export that way… How are you exporting? via Print to Video or Edit to tape?

    Hello,

Thanks for getting back. That’s what I do. Position on timeline, hit record on the camera, hit play on the timeline and it doesn’t record pictures. I use edit to tape.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that I don’t have quick time pro? (i have qt v7) someone suggested that but it’s strange cause pictures went in ok.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

Before you do a “crash record” do what most people forget to do. Render video at Full Quality and set the Audio Quality to High. Then do an audio mixdown. Then crash record. This will ensure that you get the highest quality and the lowest overhead as you play out.

Shane’s reponse should be followed… and QT Pro isn’t required at all to run FCP.

    Hello,

Playing out to DVCam, the audio plays out perfectly, it only plays out the first frame of the pictures and it freezes it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.
