I have recently migrated from SD to HD (XDCAM), and I’m looking for a good way to demo HD product to clients. I don’t have blu-ray capability yet, so I’ve been using my MacBook Pro to play back self-contained Quicktime files to my 58″ HDTV through the RGB cable. Quite frankly, the result is underwhelming. I’ve had clients tell me they can’t see much difference from SD. I know this is merely mirroring the laptop’s display, so maybe this isn’t the best method for playback. Would an Apple TV be a better choice?

Hi, I have a similar situation but I managed to use an Apple 30″ HD monitor connected to my mac book pro as a second monitor and it was brilliant. If there are other options out there I would like to hear about them.

    Hi Chris,
Few days ago i went to a shop to try to see some of the stuff I’ve been shooting with the EX-1.
I plugged my MBP through a DVI-HDMI connexion.
Some of the stuff looked great. Some other clips no so good, but I think that setting up the TV properly (I didn’t try in the shop) everything could look really well.
Another thing we have to learn is to look those big screen that are coming from a longer distance. The bigger the screen, the longer. Otherwise our eyes won’t integrate those big pixels and things can look worst than in a cheap SD TV set.

Your suggestion of an Apple TV is a good one. We have one in our ‘viewing room’ and finally we are able to show our HD movies in really decent quality. We have it hooked to a 50″ plasma and the cool thing is that it accepts 720p24 and plays it out properly. It’s great. The only real downside of it is the syncing aspect. It’s pretty convoluted.
