Playhead look backward toggle for fx
Posted by Alex Udell on December 3, 2009 at 3:01 pmHi Guys…
Is there a way (hot key toggle) to force the playhead to look back to the previous frame?
When building fx that occur over the entire duration of a clip I find that I consistently have to build the last keyframe on the frame preceeding the last frame of the clip and then move the key frames to the end of the clip.
edit* used to have a hot/toggle which would let the playhead look both ways quickly while editing.
or is there a better method?
Thanks Pros,
Alex

You can move it but I do not understand your use of the term look.

December 3, 2009 at 4:43 pmHi David…
When parked at the edit point between two clips, the playhead is focused on the frame ahead (as noted by the gray box to the right of the playhead in the time scale ruler)…
in edit* you hit a key (can’t remember what it is now) so that the gray box (equivalent) would temporarily be to the left of the playhead and the canvas would show the preceeding frame.
sorry of this is kind of newbie for this forum…

sorry of this is kind of newbie for this forum… “Ah, “edit*” means nothing to me, you might as well say “Avid” or “Premiere.” FCP actually has some peculiar frame reference behaviors but they have never impacted my work so I do not pay attention to those discussions.
We were all new to this at one time or another.

December 4, 2009 at 3:17 pmHi…
I think the answer lies in the fact that I have to alter my understanding of “last frame” by FCP meaning.
In fx editing if I want to place a key frame on the last frame of the clip…
I can use the “jump to next edit key” and then back up one frame by tapping left.
Since FCP always looks at the incoming frame….this is essentially the last frame….so the moving of the keyframes is essentially unnecessary I suppose.

December 4, 2009 at 3:23 pmI think you’re talking about something like this…if you are in the timeline, and you hit the down arrow on your keyboard, you’ll go to the next edit but then it shows the first frame if the next clip. If you then hit the left arrow, it will go to the last frame of the previous clip.
Am I understanding what you’re trying to do?

Ctrl – Up Arrow = Show Prev EditCtrl – Shift – Down Arrow = Show 2nd Next Edit
Ctrl – Shift – Up Arrow = Show 2nd Prev Edityou may have to remap your OS X “spaces” functionality to make this work for you

December 5, 2009 at 3:17 amAs another former edit*or, I have the same question as Alex, just phrased differently.
If I set a key frame on the first frame of a clip, what is easiest way to get to the last frame of the same clip (so I can set a final keyframe)?
Is it: Arrow Down (next edit) then Left Arrow (last frame of previous edit)?
