  • Playback problem – video is jittery

Posted by Liam Johnson on February 17, 2011 at 8:01 pm

I’m editing on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GV RAM.

Up until a week ago, video playback in the canvas performed fine in my FCP (version 6.0.6). However, the video now appears to skip several frames and appear jittery during playback. It worked fine for the last 2 years.

Videos specs are DV/DVCPRO – NTSC. Video looks fine after export, despite how it appears in FCP. The problem only exists with playback on the canvas.

It’s as if the video plays back slowly, then jumps ahead several frames to catch up.

I’ve double-checked all the settings under System Settings and User Preferences, but I’ve had no luck in finding the cause of this. I looked through other threads but haven’t found anything to resolve this.

Hoping that someone has a great idea or answer!

This is my home setup – no monitor. The playback issue occurs within FCP alone.

Couple of guesses. Are you running your media on an external USB drive? If so is it fairly full.

Alternatively is your media on the system drive and is that getting full as well. Your problem sounds like drive speed.

I am also having the same problem but only in export. The clip plays fine in canvas and viewer. It even jitters after exporting to Blu-ray disc (via FCP7 Share) and export to file. The jitters are identical though. Stumped over here.

What drive are you capturing too?
What drive are you playing your bluRay files off of?

Everything is on an external HD, but 194 GB free. I was hoping this was the problem, but it was the first thing I ruled out.

The system drive is 158 GB free, so it’s not that either.

Is there any other possibility for something filling up?? I’m stumped. Have confirmed all settings are correct and streamlined with the FCP settings I use at work.

I have my (2) 2TB ext hard drives through firewire 800. The one that has the capture footage has 118gb free and the other 1.52Tb free.

I’m going to give Motion a try to see if it cleans it.
