  • Playback issues in FCP (Firestore/Quicktime 24p errors?)

I’ve got about an hour and a half of footage, shot on a Canon XLH2 and recorded to a firestore (fs-4) as Quicktime 24p files. Usually, I record as straight Quicktime files and set the frame rate on the camera as 24p and it comes out fine. I chose to record as Quicktime 24p, thinking it wouldn’t be a problem (and because I had issues with shooting in 24p and recording as normal QT files on a brand new Firestore FS-5, but that’s another story).

Well, the Firestore as usual breaks down the video into several clips, each of about 11 minutes. On every single clip, at about the 7:30 mark, the video looks like what you see in the screenshot below (it reminds me of shooting on mini-dv with a dirty tape). Still get audio. What’s really weird is that when I play them in preview, I can actually see the video and not the colored dots you see in the picture, but as soon as I stop the video they come back. The video does not play on the timeline though, once it hits the 7:30 mark on each clip I get audio but the dots are there. The dots also show up when I play the clips in preview or Quicktime itself.

I’m holding out hope that I can salvage it because of the fact that I know the actual video is there since it plays in the preview monitor.

Anyone seen this before, got any ideas?

    I’m running FCP 5.1.4

I have never seen this happen within a clip, seen it when settings were wrong but the entire clip was like this. Different camera. different FS.

The Fix is normally playing the clips back on the firestore to the camera. Then record the clips to a tape (or in my case P2 cards).

Other thing to try is to play the clips from the FS to Log and Capture in FCP, set to non controllable device.

    Ah, thanks.

After creating a new project with Easy Setup (DV-NTSC_23.98) I was finally able to get it to play in the timeline, though the dots are still there when it stops. But at least I can record to a deck now.
