  • Playback issues in all NLE’s and Video Playing Apps

    Hi Guys,

I have a very serious problem, that even some Apple Freaks around me could not figure out so far.
Help is much appreciated – also to give me heads up wether is post is in the right forum. If not, point me, please, in the right direction.

    Here is the problem:

Since a while now, in every NLE, Video Playback and Grading software I use (FCPX, DaVinci, AVID, QT 7&X, VLC), I have hick ups (every 20 seconds or so video or video & sound hangs up for 1-2 seconds, then plays back normal again).
Only software it does not happen is PPro.
Also: It only happens if the Media is played from one of my Internal RAIDS (Mirrored and Stripped). When playing the media from the System HD or an External USB3, it shows no hang ups.

I tried it all, including cleaning caches, system preferences clean ups with Digital Rebellion software, rebuilding the RAIDs and so on.
When I tried to open a new user account, suddenly the problem is gone.
Now, I do not want to migrate tons of data, plug ins, passwords and settings & permissions to a new user account.
So, I hoped, any of you has any idea, which wicked PLIST or preference file in my current user account could cause such nasty playback hick ups?

My current system is Mac OSX 10.10.5

Thanx a lot for any ideas or/and suggestions.

    Greetings,

I’d be inclined to run some tests on the RAID. I had something very similar happen for a couple of weeks, then one of the drives in the array failed.

(For some reason I can\’t edit my own posts so apologies in advance for the stupid mistakes and bad English that I can\’t go back and fix)

    Hi Jeff,

Holy Moly, you are faster than a lightning.
    Thanx.
Well, I doubt it’s the RAID: SSince it was my first thought, I rebuild them, checked the drives multiple times, with several Softwares,
rebuild the RAIDs, trying both versions: Apple RAID and SoftRaid.
Also: When I create a new user account and playback material from exactly those RAIDs, all works fine, without any hick ups.
So, they can’t be the source of evil.

    Thanx.

You may have answered your own question right there. See Ronnie Courtens response in this recent thread on fcp.co

But that is wiping the original account, it just gives you a way of getting a user account with same Login back.

Ronnies method will rebuild the account. He mentions exactly what you are seeing. Poor performance under your account and proper performance under a test new user account. This line is from the page the link takes you to:

If the new user test works, what you should do next is to rebuild the existing user account. You can do this without wiping the drive. It can be a little scary, but it doesn’t take very long to do.

Maybe you didn’t read this page?

    Hi,

    I figured it out!!!
Before trying the new account method of Ronni,
I did disable some things and it worked!!!
Apparently it was either my Default Folder X in the Library/PreferencePane or one of following items in the Login Items under System Preferences:
    – iTunes Helper
    -Disk Warrior Daemon
    – Total Finder
    – DropBox

After kicking all of those out, logging out and in again, all runs smooth like a cat on a vaseline Pipe.

Glad to hear you figured it out. Creating a new user would disable all the third party login items. iTunes helper is a system function so it’s not that because I have that in my login items with no issues. You could try adding them back in one at a time to see which one is causing the issue. Good luck!

Thanx Nick, that’s what I will do.
If I have some findings, I let you know.
