  • Playback issue on external screens

Posted by Marc Oberdorfer on July 10, 2010 at 8:05 am

I have a 15inch Macbook Pro with Mini Display port and recently bought a Griffin adapter cable that lets you output the signal to HDMI and DVI. I hooked up my Dell 24inch monitor by DVI. Playing back anything within Final Cut results in a totally screwed up playback, as in frames would be jumping all over the place… totally messy and random playback… obviously impossible to work with.
At the same time playback on the Macbook itself is also screwed up and only shutting down Final Cut and disconnecting the screen resolves the playback issue on the Macbook.
I also hooked up my Benq beamer through HDMI, again with the Griffin adapter but the same problem.

I can playback movies on the external screens without a problem and use them for other purposes so it looks like it is a Final Cut related issue…? Any ideas?

The problem isn’t the display setup you’re using don’t think…

It’s far more likely that the media is wonky or the drives you’re using are…

Post the format you’re attempting to work with, the OS version you’re running, version of QT you’re running, and most importantly your scratch disk format and type… a raid? or?

I can’t imagine it’s a codec or media issue. When no external display is connected everything plays back perfectly fine. I transcode all my footage to Prores 422. Running OSX 10.5.8, latest version of FCS and QT 7.6.6

My scratch is on a external Buffalo harddisk connected through USB2.0, haven’t had any issues with that configuration so far.

AH, didn’t understand it plays back OK without the second display… but the problem is really apparent to me now!

It’s your scratch disk. USB 2.0 isn’t a connection that’s friendly with video files. You’re likely seeing this problem now because you’re asking the computer to do a lot driving that second monitor, and the USB drive just can’t keep up anymore… bet if you added a faster drive setup you’re problems would simply go away. You want at least a Firewire 800 connected drive. A dual drive setup is even faster. If you connect that SAME drive via eSATA it’s even faster. Until you rectify this you’ll have problems playing back media files.

Thanks Jerry, I took your advice and hooked up my Lacie FW800 external one and it works fine now.

    AMEN

NEVER use USB drives for editing video.
