I am using premiere pro cs5. I recorded some footage a few years ago and I’m finally ready to edit it however…

My footage is in .mov files. When I try and import it an error message appears saying: Codec missing or unavailable.

I convert a file to an .mp4 file and I can now import it, however the preview screen doesn’t play back its just a still image. Audio works though, and if I pause the video and select the clip it updates the frame.

I tested the .mp4 file with windows movie maker and it seems to work fine.

Please help me figure this out!

    Thanks!

Can you make a small sample (under 30-40MB), upload it to Google Drive, Dropbox or a similar service, and post a link here so it could be downloaded and tested?

The .mov (QuicTime) file is encoded in a very exotic way. The codec shows “HDV 1080i50”, yet QT player shows actual res at 1888×1062 – and plays audio only. Neither Premiere Pro CS5 nor AME can load it: “bad codec”.

Converted to H.264 1080i50 (1440×1080) using Handbrake, Premiere Pro CS5 crashes importing it; AME reports “unknow error” trying to encode it.

Converted to WMV using Windows Movie Maker (WMM) into a 1080i29.97, the resulting file plays fine in Premiere Pro. Here it is.

I am mystified – and don’t have time to work more on it – maybe later. My guess – the file is encoded in an exotic way and even though Handbrake can see it, it encodes it with errors. WMM encodes it successfully, even if with a different frame rate.
