I shot a 2.5 hour musical on the DVX100A in 24PA. I shot in the LP mode as there wasn’t an idea time to change tape during the first or second act. So I have two LP mode tapes. My tape stock is the Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ.

My camera is a Sony VX2000. I used that to ingest the tape into my system. (Hindsite, not the best way to ingest, I know…will get a deck for the future) The Panasonic was on loan so I could check out the 24PA. Prior to ingesting I rewinded the the tape only to hear that wonderful sound of tape being eaten. I immediately stopped the tape and took out and checked it for damage. There was none. So I went ahead and ran my Panasonic head cleaning tape through the camera just to be sure there was nothing clogging the heads. When I put the tape back in the camera and played the tape, there was no audio for that last 4 minutes that it rewound. The video was fine, no visual evidence of tape being eaten. Now I know there was audio recorded on the entire tape as I saw the levels going to tape. When I play the tape back from the beinging, I get great audio levels and video, all the way up to the last 4-5 minutes, where the audio just drops out. I have even tried to playback on the Panasonic camera and still get the same results. I am ingesting into FCP 5.0 with firewire. Someone mentioned that on DV your audio & video are together, so if the video is there so should the audio.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve seen the audio get messed up before, but that was when there was visual signs the video had been eaten or damaged.

Not necessarily- video or audio can be present without the other if the tape is damaged. I’d suggest going to a professional dubbing house to see if they can save the footage you need.
