  • Playback gets glitchy after transition

On my timeline, I have a series of video clips and still photos, and there are cross dissolves between them. When I click in the middle of one of them and play, everything is fine. When I let it play through a transition, the playback on the canvas goes berserk with crazy flickering (as shown) and occasionally some green shapes and lines. When I stop the playback, click off the clip, and click back on in the middle of the clip, it’s fine. It doesn’t export like this, so it’s only an issue during my editing. Also, the longer the timeline, it seems like the worse it gets in general.

I’ve never had this happen before, what’s going on?

    Sequence settings:
    1440×1080 HD 16:9
    Field Dominance Upper (odd)
Compressor: XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 mbps)

Source footage is XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 Mb/s VBR)

I’m running Final Cut 7.0.1 on a Macbook Pro, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, GeForce 8600M GT 256 VRAM total

I should also mention I solved this issue by converting all the source footage to ProRes 422 and changing the sequence settings. I just want to know why this is happening because I’ve never really worked with XDCAM footage before. I recently graduated and we didn’t generally get to work with broadcast quality cameras a whole lot 😛 I read some things that said XDCAM didn’t play well in FCP sometimes, and others where people editing in it all the time.

If I was making a guess, I would say that the issue is my computer isn’t powerful enough to edit the XDCAM footage and it’s a memory or video card issue struggling to keep up with real time rendering of transitions or something…but that’s just a guess.

    Hi Kylee,
XDCAM footage will be edit on XDCAM codec you can edit your footage with out using Pro Ress 422.I think your problem will solve after reading this white paper

Thanks for the suggestion. I read that white paper before I got the footage actually since I knew I would be getting XDCAM to work with and I wanted to see what I could learn ahead of time. The footage was shot by someone else and he took all the files off the discs, re-wrapped them to Quicktime and gave them to me on a hard drive, so a lot of those steps with ingesting don’t seem to apply in this case. …Right?
