  • Playback FPS drops over time…..

Posted by David Norman on September 29, 2013 at 12:52 am

So recently something change with my system and I am now struggling to get 10+ FPS playback of 1080p 60fps content in the preview window…

when i load Vegas and play a video in the timeline it starts by playing 59.940 FPS in the preview window and with in about 10 seconds it slows down to sub 10 FPS

    I dont really get it.

I hve 32gb of RAM and it shows less than 5 in use, i have a i7 3770k and it is under 50% load

and my video content is on a 2×256 Intel SSD Raid 0 array…

so i am not sure what is going on here.

    anyone have any idea?

First, look if you have changed the Preview Quality?

well, i think i was always running on Best (half)

I think it is interesting that my FPS are low but the CPU, GPU, RAM nor SSD are maxing out…

not sure where the bottleneck is 🙁

Not knowing whats on your system, its very hard to point to
    specifically whats causing this…
Still, Use the Task Manager, under Processes, to maybe see if
anything is hogging your system/resources in the background.

i did when i installed, i will go back to default and see if that “fixes” it

I do like using the ram preview for viewing transitions and clips with overlays and such at decent frame rates, so not sure how that will effect that…

also since i still have a ton of ram it will be too bad if vegas just doesnt know how to use it.

    ill report back.

    thanks for the ideas

so i just went back the 200mb default and it still does it.

strange, when i first start playback it will be at 59fps but it slowly drops as i am playing the video…. eventually it gets to 10fps where it levels off.

I have a decent amount of stuff running…. but nothing that looks like it is eating up a lot of CPU cycles or anything…

    hmm

Try re-installing Vegas, you wont lose your custom settings.

“…also since i still have a ton of ram it will be too bad if vegas just doesnt know how to use it.”

You can’t force any program to use more RAM than it needs.

But, try increasing the RAM Preview –

Reset? I don’t recall a “reset” feature in any previous version – but Holding Ctrl + Shift while starting Vegas will reset all preferences and delete cached data prior to loading the program. If you have recently installed new hardware (especially a new graphics card), this is necessary because Vegas may be loading settings for your old hardware.
