Pretty much everything in After Effects must be rendered before it will play. It is not a realtime playback environment.

Press the numeric keypad “Enter” key t start a render. You will see a green line begin to extend left-to-right on your compositing timeline. When you have rendered the portion you wish to preview, it will playback.

    System:
    Dell Precision T7600 (x2)
    Win 7 64-bit
    32GB RAM
Adobe CC 2014 (as of 7/2015)
    256GB SSD system drive
4 internal media drives RAID 5
Typically cutting short form from HD MP4 and P2 MXF.

[Dave LaRonde] “Yup. You’ll want to look up the new previewing procedures. I’m told they take some getting used to.”

    Lots of information here:

Plus a list of fixes in 13.5.1, many of which are preview-related:

the issue is that the spacebar does not stop or pause on the exact place i want it to.

Some say it’s a bug, some say it’s the way it’s supposed to work. Whatever it is, it’s annoying. It’s definitely not just you. I’ve tried to understand it and have adjusted my preview settings, but it just never seems to work the way it should.

Thanks Daniel, its so annoying, i do a lot of editing from just audio files so markers are vital, its such a bummer that i cant use my space bar to pause or stop the audio at the appropriate marker. I cant believe adobe on this one but then again when you have a monopoly that’s to be expected

I am replying to this old thread,as the app has now been updated and we finally have this functionality, to use the RAM preview like a regular editor. I love how AE can now playback footage in realtime (on my 3xioFX RAID set up anyway).

    To get it working:
    In the Preview panel:
    -Select Spacebar from shortcut
    -uncheck cache before playback
    -Range = entire duration
-Uncheck If caching play cached frames
-CHECK Move time to Preview time

very useful for adding GFX at the right time quickly.

Now if we can get audio scrubbing to work smoothly while holding ctrl we will be there!
