  • Plasma or LCD monitor Recommendation

Hello, the post house I work for is looking to buy a good HD monitor around 42″ in size for our Final Cut Editing suite. I was curious what other people were using these days for client monitors and for possible color correcting with Apples new Color, and if anyone had any recommendations. We are looking to spend $3500 or less. Is LCD better than Plasma for this?

Currently we are using a standard def Sony PVM-20N6U and a Panasonic BT-LH1700W for HD.

    Thanks!

Panasonic Pro HD Plasma Series. 42″ is about $1,000 and the 50″ is about $1,700. These are excellent monitors with standard BNC connections. We run the 50 and 42 in our two suites.

Plasma is much better than LCD at this price range right now. Blacks are much truer, though we don’t color grade with these monitors, we still use our Sony PVML5 CRT monitors for that.

Here’s the Panasonic page for the monitors and you can find much cheaper pricing at sites like http://www.bhphoto.com

Plasma is much more CRT-like than LCD, and without image latency many LCDs have. Lots of people on this forum are using Panasonic’s TH429UK, but they are no longer available at most resellers. I’m not certain what the replacement model is, but check out VisualApex.com. Many on this forum bought our monitors from them — they’re great, and the only online store I’d ever buy from.

TH4210UK is coming this either july or this fall I believe.

10UK is the official new designation of the next gen.

David, while your here on this thread, did you say you have
successfully captured pro-res HD video on your dual core G5 mac
    via your kona card?

I have also had great luck with a website:

    http://www.bestbuyplasma.com

I have bought a few large LCDs from them and had a good experience with them.

[Borjis] “did you say you have

Affirmative, I have sucessfully captured SD Kona LH 525 29.97 ProRes422, both standard and HQ, to my 2.3ghz dual processor G5.

I don’t have an HD deck here, so I have not been able to attempt HD.

I have converted some DVCProHD to ProRes422 however, and it looks terrific.

    Hope this helps,
    David
