Plans for a software-only version of the 5.2 10-bit codec for OSX and Windows.
I’m a DVD designer and author and I have a client who has been supplying me with video assets they have output to disk using the Black Magic 10-bit codec. I do not myself have a DeckLink card but for this workflow I installled the Black Magic software codec a Mac G5 2.0 GHz dual CPU running OSX 10.4.3. This codec is dated Aug 1, 2003, revision 4.0.
Recently this client updated their DeckLink drivers and software for Final Cut to version 5.2 and now I’m seeing a distinct gamma shift between their video assets (prepared using the 10-bit codec) and their still assets (output as PICTs). I don’t have a DeckLink card installed on this system so I haven’t performed a similar update myself. I did however poke around in the 5.2 installer package and was able to install just the 5.2 codec, dated December 5, 2005.
While this fixes the gamma shift problems between the video and still assets, it introduces a new problem since this version of the codec also includes support for preview through the DeckLink card. This makes it impossible to correctly configure preview in AfterEffects through the Aja IoLD box that I actually use for this purpose.
The big question is whether Black Magic is going to rev. the software-only version of the codec (and fix this workflow – which I am sure is not unique to my studio) and if so, when? I would point out that this situation applies to the Windows version of the codec which exhibits the same shift in gamma.
