So if anyone wants to really see what can be achieved in High Definition, be sure to watch Discovery’s “Planet Earth” series in high definition. I’m pretty sure there were no HDV cameras used in this one.

From the Behind the Scenes segments they’re showing on Discovery HD Theater, looks like a combination of HDCAM and Film equipment was used.

depends on whether you count XDcam in that list.

Actually the BBC Natural History unit are all about the Panasonic cameras – check the press release here:

The vast majority of footage is from the Varicam (edited I believe in FCP) – and boy does it look loverly!

And, just imagine what it looks like before its compressed for the satellite…

no kidding. And I would LOVE to see this on another cable system too. Charter Communications leaves a LOT to be desired when it comes to their HD signal.

Interesting because I thought I saw a Sony camera during the Birds of Paradise behind the scenes segment.

Indeed a beautiful show… Episode MOUNTAINS was stunning. Even on Comcast SD. The snowfalling was just beautiful.

I’ve been looking forward for that airing and wasn’t (too) disapointed.

Man, I’d sure like to have been part of that.

It was pretty good, but I think they where a little technical. It was really annoying when every two minutes they would say “we’re using this new high tech camera to shoot stuff we never could before.” No person outside the Film industry really cares, they just want to watch a documentary about the Earth, not the Project. I do have to say though the shots were awesome. It was incredible that they filmed the ocean floor with all the huge crabs and stuff. I also like the slow motion frames, it really helped the visual appeal and showed more detail of what’s happening.

I am not so sure about that. With the advent of HD in everyone’s living rooms, and all the buzz words like 1080p, digital cable, LCD, plasma, Hd DVD, Bluray, blah blah blah, people are interested in seeing how it gets done and what it takes to get it done. They have been forced to learn all about this stuff and for those that are the least bit interested in how stuff works, they want to see a bit of the action. It’s the very reason they put behind the scenes material on DVDs. People like to see that stuff.

I don’t understand. Discovery HD has been showing original HD content for like 5 years, before anything other than HDCam even existed.

You know, I was going to explain my (too) comment above, but decided to take it out before finalizing my post… but that and “This is the first time this has ever been filmed” every minute got on my nerves too.

NOT saying it bothered me – just saying I noticed it and it took me ‘out’ of the show for a second.

Just thought I needed to say that after someone else was taken ‘out’ too.
