    Ok this must be so simple that I must be overlooking the obvious. I have made a comp for a sky image with the CC Sphere plugin applied to it and turn on the 3D layer switch. I bring that comp into a new comp with a plain layer created and positioned as if your looking across a table top but you don’t see the front edge. I turn on the 3D switch on this layer as well. The problem is that the sky comp bleeds through the plain layer. I have tried repositioning the sky layer behind the plane layer and still get the same thing. I have tried different track matte options and blending modes and can’t get the effect of the sky masked and behind the plane layer. I want the sky comp to appear all around the plane layer but not show through it. I am going to have a lot of camera moves and want the sky to oriented with respect to the camera.

    So what am I missing?

    The CC sphere layer should not have the 3D switch on. The CC sphere layer should be left as 2D and placed at the bottom of the timeline layer stack.

    CC Sphere is a very old effect. As such, its interaction with 3D planes needs to be updated, since it doesn’t interact with AE’s camera or lights, sad to say. So it might not work the way you want.

    Have you looked at any of the Conoa plugins?

    there are a couple of problems with your plan…

    first is that cc sphere will not interact with you 3d camera… andrew kramer has a tutorial where he shows how to link the rotation parameters to some of the camera parameters to generate interaction between the two, but there are limitations with that. if you want to check out the tutorial, click his face at the top of the ae forum page… the tutorial is one of the early earth tutorials. if it’s not there, click the link to his site (videocopilot.net), you’ll find it there.

    second… i think you are trying to see the inside of the sphere, correct? you won’t be able to get inside the sphere to create the dome-like effect that i think you are trying to accomplish…

    third, there is a difference in plugin 3d space and ae 3d space. this is a limitation even in 3d effects that work with the camera, they can’t interact with other 3d layers, unless, like particular or 3d stroke, there is a work around within the plugin… even then you’ll find limitations, like only being able to interact with a single 3d layer….

    your best bet to create a 3d sky around your 3d scene is to try cc cylinder. it will work with your camera, you can get ‘inside’ the cylinder with the camera, and since it has no bottom, you can position it so it is on top of your ground plane so intersection is not a problem.

    cycore also has an effect called environment… it is part of there upgraded cc hd effects package. it might do what you are looking for…

    As always the simple is never so simple. Give me the complicated task at least then I know up front it’s going to be a challenge. I have abandoned the idea of being inside a sphere and just placed a flat layer in the back behind all my other layers.

    I beg to differ Dave, but I can do it … (CS3) … but yes, your square layer trick would work. It would be as if the rest of the sphere were transparent.
