I need to create an effect like pixie dust where a little ‘tinkerbell’ point of light trails dust and leaves behind some words as it goes.

I’ve never used particles before and was wondering if anyone here had some tips or tutorials which would help me go about creating this efect?

I’m using AE5.5 (prod) and also testing AE7. Unfortuantely I don’t have any of the snazzy plugins I keep seeing everywhere so I need to create this effect using AE only.

    ANy help much appreciated.

Run to your nearest bookseller and buy everything you can find by Trish and Chris Meyer.

It’s not complicated but it involves some higher functions like motion tracking, motion sketch or importing a path from Illustrator. Then you (simply) use the path as the keyframes for the particle emitter.

The particles don’t leave the letters. You need to use a mask or a traveling gradient wipe or some other effect to reveal the underlying layer.

I’m not sure what terms to suggest you start searching for but we’ve been handling similar questions here and on the Adobe AE forum for many years, there’s a wealth of archived threads. Try AE Portal, too.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
