I have used dv camcorders like the Sony TRV900 and the Canon GL2, and I am a little confused. Supposedly, the CCDs have up to, say 1 million plus pixels cumulative on the GL2. Why, then is the frame size only 720 x 480, which is only about 350,000 pixels? Why are CCDs even said to have more pixels than 720 x 480?

Many of these camcorders can also take still images and use the full size of the CCD for those.
